During his personal time, Jim Vojcsik of United Way of Martin County volunteers as a school-based mentor for a young man named Michael who is being raised by his grandmother. Michael and Jim had a relationship over a four-year period during which Michael was in middle school and high school. Over the course of Jim's mentorship, Michael began to see more success in school—with Jim's support and guidance, Michael was able to maintain, and in many cases improve his grades, his school attendance and his behavior.
There are hundreds of adult volunteers just like Jim in United Way of Martin County's community who are involved in school-based mentoring programs. Each and every one of these volunteers is creating positive impact on the lives of their own Michaels.
